Previous Federal Bureau of Investigation director James the former director has denied the charges to making false statements to congressional representatives and obstructing a legislative process.

The former director's attorney filed the answer representing him in a national courtroom in Alexandria, Virginia on Wednesday.

The defense lawyer declared he would try to have the case dismissed for various causes including that his the accused, a opponent of President Donald Trump, was being targeted.

James Comey was formally accused shortly after the former president pressured his chief prosecutor to proceed against him.

In court on mid-week, Comey's lawyer Patrick Fitzgerald informed the court they intended to file various petitions to terminate the case before a legal hearing, arguing the government's case was spiteful and that a government lawyer was wrongfully designated to handle the legal matter.

James Comey's legal matter was originally overseen by the original attorney, who stepped down under influence from the former president after his investigation into a different rival - New York Attorney General Letitia James - failed to file indictments.

The former director seemed in optimistic frame of mind as he entered the legal venue on Wednesday, chatting with his legal team and sharing humor. He was joined by his partner, his wife and offspring Maureen Comey, a federal prosecutor who the Trump administration dismissed.

Following the reading to the magistrate recite his rights and the two counts against him in legal proceedings on mid-week, the defendant was asked if he comprehended the charges.

Background Context

The former director was the chief of the Federal Bureau of Investigation from 2013-2017 and was terminated about a few months into Donald Trump's first term as commander-in-chief. At the moment, Mr Comey was directing an investigation into foreign election meddling and whether there were any links between Moscow and Trump's campaign.

During his tenure, James Comey triggered a negative reaction from the Democratic party when he announced just immediately preceding the 2016 presidential election that he was probing political contender Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server. Indictments against Hillary Clinton were not filed, causing negative feedback from conservative politicians as well.

Ongoing Accusations

Prosecutors assert the former director provided false information to the legislature during a congressional hearing in recent years when he was being questioned about both the email probe as well as the Russia election probe. They allege he misled the upper house by saying he had not authorized a person at the Federal Bureau of Investigation to release to media organizations details about the FBI investigations.

Legal representatives also charge Mr Comey of "improperly attempting to influence, obstruct and delay" the panel by giving misleading testimony to it.

Via social media James Comey published to his online platform after he was indicted, he declared he was wrongly accused and accused Donald Trump of behaving like a "tyrant".

"We have known for a long time that there are ramifications to opposing Mr Trump," he stated. "We choose not to live on our bended knee."

The accusations against James Comey came after the former president published on online platforms insisting on his attorney general, Pam Bondi, charge Mr Comey and others.
