Major Internet Failure Impacts Dozens Websites and Applications
A widespread online outage has impacted many online platforms and applications worldwide, as users noting troubles connecting to the web due to difficulties at the online infrastructure platform.
The disrupted platforms include Snapchat, the gaming platform Roblox, Signal, and the language learning app Duolingo, as well as a host of Amazon-owned operations including its primary shopping platform and the Ring security home security firm.
Across the United Kingdom, Lloyds bank was disrupted in addition to its subsidiaries the bank Halifax and Bank of Scotland, while there were additional accounts of problems using the HMRC site on Monday morning. Also in the UK, many Ring customers took to online platforms to state their doorbells were malfunctioning.
Just within Britain, reports of problems on particular applications ran into the tens of thousands for each platform.
The company stated that the problem began in the eastern region of the US at the cloud division, a section that offers essential web backbone for many companies, who utilize capacity on AWS infrastructure. The cloud platform is the biggest global cloud computing service.
Shortly after the start of the day (PDT) in the US (8 in the morning BST), officials reported “higher error rates and delays” for AWS services in a zone on the eastern US of the United States. The ripple effect seemed to hit apps worldwide, and the outage tracking website reporting outages with the same sites in different parts of the world.
The outage tracker Thousand Eyes, a platform that tracks online failures, further indicated a surge in outages on Monday morning, with many of them situated in the state of Virginia, the region of the eastern US data center where the company stated the outage began.
