Doris Included in Irish Team While Joe McCarthy Misses Out
Newly reappointed manager Andy Farrell has selected skipper Caelan Doris in his Irish team for the fall Tests, but Joe McCarthy misses out.
The captain, absent from play since undergoing shoulder surgery in early May, recently returned to Leinster training, but it remains unclear whether he will be fit to play against New Zealand in the US on 1 November.
Lock McCarthy, however, did not make the cut after failing to recover from the foot injury he sustained during the first Lions Test against the Wallabies in July.
Northern province forward Izuchukwu and southern province winger Nash are also absent due to injury, while full-back Hugo Keenan had already been ruled out after undergoing hip surgery after the Lions tour.
Leinster prop McCarthy - the brother of Joe - is the sole uncapped player in the 34-player group, but the Irish Rugby Football Union says new Munster duo Edogbo and Gleeson and previously capped Connacht wing Bolton will head to the US as "cover".
After playing the All Blacks at the Chicago stadium in a repeat of their 2016 encounter, Ireland host Japan, Australia and world champions South Africa in the Irish capital.
"It's an exciting group to the panel and it's a chance for the more experienced members and for the newcomers on the summer tour to the Lelos and Portugal," said the coach, back to national team duties after taking a sabbatical to coach the British and Irish Lions to Australia.
In a largely experienced selection, the Dublin club's Sam Prendergast and Munster's Jack Crowley will again vie for the starting number 10 position. The number 10 jersey is still available, as the two players set to play against each other for the first time in the upcoming United Rugby Championship match at the Dublin venue.
Frawley is the third fly-half chosen with the coach deciding not to calling up Leinster's Byrne.
At scrum-half, Farrell has selected British and Irish Lion Jamison Gibson-Park and Casey, who led the national side to the summer international wins over the Lelos and the Lobos. Additionally, there is a return for the western province's Caolin Blade, chosen to teammate Murphy.
Robbie Henshaw, Aki, Ringrose and McCloskey form an veteran cohort of centre options. Jamie Osborne is a further choice in the midfield, though the youngster is additionally a leading candidate to cover for the full-back at number 15.
Wingers James Lowe, Mack Hansen, O'Brien and Jacob Stockdale are named. O'Brien shone on his first Ireland outings during the summer with a brace each in the wins over the Lelos and Portugal.
Paddy McCarthy is the sole new name in the Ireland pack. The loose-head prop has started two of his province's three United Rugby Championship matches so far and played in the second string's defeat by the English in the English city previously.
The 22-year-old was selected in interim boss O'Connell's summer squad, but did not earn a international appearance.
Southern province second row Ahern, who received his debut appearances in those Tests, is retained, while experienced Northern province second row Henderson is back after sitting out the summer matches.
Jack Conan, who played in each of the Lions Tests over the summer, is poised to deputise for the captain if the captain does not regain fitness in time to play New Zealand.
The Ireland squad will assemble in the capital on Monday before flying to the US on the following day.
